We knew that the boat racing festival was approaching, but we didn't know that days of celebrating precede the actual races. Last night when we wandered downtown, we were surprised to find ourselves engulfed (and lost!) in a sea of humanity preparing to celebrate by celebrating.
This afternoon all our neighbors were building these small boats (pictured) which they then put small lit candles in and send them down the Mekong River. If we understood correctly, this symbolizes their sins being carried away.

  1. Hi Pam & Mark, I have been thinking about you lots. Bruce & Lisa are circulating your blog. Hope you are enjoying the new culture and the opportunity to teach. Rachel's wedding was last weekend (the 25th of September). I think I have recuperated. :-) It was a great time and good to have all my children in one place together! Fall is upon us, so the leaves will soon have all their color displayed. Take care, Debbie G.
